BEGINNING ON JUNE 10, THE WEEKENDS WILL BE CLOSED AT THE SUMNER TUNNEL FOR EXTENSIVE MAINTENANCE.

The Sumner Tunnel, completed in the 1930s, was the state’s first and one of the nation’s oldest. The city of Boston has transformed significantly since the 1930s, and the tunnel is about to undergo restoration, including chipped and crumbling concrete, rusted reinforcements, cracked wall panels, broken light fixtures, and exposed rebar on the ceiling, all of which have been present for at least a couple of generations.

Many people use the tunnel every day,, and now they must find a new route into the city. Logan International Airport may also be reached through the tunnel. After months of construction, no one will be able to depart the tunnel over the weekend.

HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE UPCOMING PROJECT:

The project is broken down into the following 3 phases:

 PHASE 1: PARTIALLY CLOSER :

Efforts will begin on June 10 and go until Spring of next year, when the first phase is scheduled to conclude. This Phase will see a wide range of improvements. New LED lights, upgraded fire alarms, a new fire prevention system, and new electrical systems are all included.

The tunnel will be shut down for 36 weekends throughout this maintenance period. Starting at 11 p.m. on Fridays, the stores will be closed to the public. Monday mornings, the tunnel will reopen to traffic at 5 a.m.

 PHASE 2: FULL CLOSURE

During Phase 2, which runs from May to September 2023, the tunnel will be shut down. During this period, workmen will dismantle the existing ceiling of the tunnel and the arch above it and then install new ceilings and arches in their place. According to the presentation, workers will complete the installation of new cables and conduits, work on the tunnel entrances, repair the tunnel walls, install fireproof painted boards, pave the road, upgrade the firefighting mechanisms, and remove the decorative fittings for portal restoration.

PHASE 3: CLOSED ON WEEKENDS

As a part of this Phase, weekend closures in the autumn and winter of 2023 will enable a range of tasks such as adding modern signs and fireproof paneling

and evaluating the underpasses. Officials say that life will be better for another century when the tunnel is renovated.
